Dish Network – one of our members reports that she and her husband ordered service in order to watch east coast football. Apparently they have a sports package not available through Comcast. The local Dish Network Franchise, Ironwood Communications did not have much customer service. First of all they did not notice that our member had a high definition TV and hooked up the wrong equipment. The company also caused damage to the wall during installation.

Another member helped sooth the problem by telling that The Graduate offers games not available on TV and that if you leave your driver’s license they give you an audio box to for better audio at your table.

The Yolo Fruit Stand on Chiles at the causeway is reported to be very good and reasonably priced – although not organic (Ikeda is not organic, either). It was noted that goat cheese was on sale and only ½ the price of one local market on Mace and W. Cowell.

If you are looking for a funny book try The Great Man by Christensen.

Someone requested a window washer – A Touch of Class was recommended.

UFC Resource Section January 2008 Meeting Notes

Hi All:

Below is a list of t he resources we shared yesterday. If you have anything to add; let me know. It might be a good idea from now on if you could bring a brochure or a business card so that I can scan it and include it in these notes.

Also, shall I include the name of the person with their offering? That way if you have more questions you contact the person directly.

I will, eventually, make categories and turn this into a chart.

I’ve included the article Joan sent and my notes from the November meeting.

Please let me know if there are any corrections --- my notes are not as complete as I thought.

Thank you all for being a part of this section. See you next month – Last Thursday at 9:30 @ Mocha Joe’s.

Joan was kind enough to forward the information she told us about re toxins in products:

Exposed: The Toxic Chemistry of Everyday Products and What's at Stake for American Power, Mark Shapiro

http://www.inspiredprotagonist.com/blog/exposed_on_the_radio

Electronic toxins banned by EU and not US: lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium) and brominated flame retardants (polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)

From Publishers WeeklyAmericans' confidence in their government-sanctioned environmental and consumer protections receives another blow in investigative reporter Schapiro's exposé, which explores such discomforting information as the 2005 U.S. Centers for Disease Control tests that found 148 toxic chemicals "in the bodies of 'Americans of all ages.'" The U.S.'s unique tendency to take no action against businesses and their products until a disaster occurs keeps them tied to 1970s standards-"exposed to substances from which increasing numbers of people around the world are being protected"-while "the principle of preventing harm before it happens, even in the face of imperfect scientific certainty," guides an increasing number of countries; by "creating legal and financial incentives," governments in Europe and Japan have kept citizens relatively safe from what contributes to the deaths "of at least 5 million people a year," according to the World Health Organization. Schapiro (co-author, with David Weir, of Circle of Poison: Pesticides and People in a Hungry World) discovers toxins in personal care products, toys, electronics and foods which are, in some cases, manufactured solely for U.S. consumption, and traces them to the people and events responsible. Though a look at growing support for change in the U.S. provides some hope, a guide to action would have been an appropriate addition to Schapiro's prescient muckraking.

February Notes

UFC Resource Section
February 28, 2008

As always it was great seeing everyone today and sharing our finds. Some of you missed today’s get together and didn’t hear the stories that went with most of the following resources and tips but we are hopeful that you will join us in March.

Shirley is working part time for Hunter Douglas at the new Costco in Woodland. Stop by to say hi and/or to ask about window treatments or carpeting.

Don’t forget - keep your eyes peeled for your ticket to get in the door next month. Our only rule is that everyone must bring one resource to share.

Consumer Protection
It was pointed out how important it is to use a licensed contractor. There is a website that allows one to check if someone says they are licensed. Just type in the contractor’s number or name.

Mission Statement
The Contractors State License Board protects consumers by regulating the construction industry through policies that promote the health, safety and general welfare of the public in matters relating to construction.
The Contractors State License Board will accomplish this by:
· Ensuring that construction is performed in a safe, competent and professional manner;
· Licensing contractors and enforcing licensing laws;
· Requiring that any person practicing or offering to practice construction contracting be licensed;
· Enforcing the laws, regulations and standards governing construction contracting in a fair and uniform manner;
· Providing resolution to disputes that arise from construction activities; and
· Educating consumers so that they make informed choices.

At Pizza Antica, we’ve created something a little different.
We call it modern family dining. We offer the professionalism of a big city eatery with the warmth of a local neighborhood joint: perfect for your first date or your 50th -- with a couple of kids in tow.
The atmosphere is sophisticated without being pretentious; stylish but still comfortable. Slide into one of our wooden banquettes and order a fabulous glass of wine while you peruse the menu. Maybe you’re in the mood for pizza. Ours is thin crust, Roman style using dough that proofs for nearly three days before we pin into pies that are both chewy and crispy. Toppings are seasonal and procured from local artisans: savory cured meats, fresh cheeses, wild mushrooms, tender, organic greens.
Our service staff is attentive without being overbearing, knowledgeable without being arrogant, qualities that may explain our growing roster of Pizza Antica regulars -- from the pint size customer looking for crayolas and cold milk, to the full grown foodie seeking a wine to pair with that tasty dish of gnocchi.

We compliment our home made recipes with artisan cured meats, seasonal and local produce and fine cheeses that meet the same high standards we hold for ourselves.

To keep our menus fresh and take advantage of seasonal ingredients, we change our menu three times a year. They're on Tapa It (Aioli Bodega Espanola - Davis, CA)
Ailoi Bodega recently expanded over into Davis, and has met with as much success as it's Sacramento sister. Davis residents are more than happy to welcome a popular restaurant into their own home, and it shows through the full house every night.We were able to make last second reservations and catch a table for two. Lucky for us, though we were happy to enjoy the decor. Aioli has done a lot with the old California Cafe' residence and it shows a lot of time, effort and though was put into making the surrounding pleasant to it's patrons. The wine glasses hanging from the bar with candles, the color of the wall, the magnanimous wine rack all add to the Spanish glory of it all. Even the strategically placed barrels to hide the kitchen light is all well appreciated, creating an intimate and convivial environment. The only thing I would change would be the paintings... the landscape photos really just don't match.We had a small, quick meal, but one to remember and enough to ensure return. We first ordered a plate of Mediterranean cured olives. Now I loves me some olives, as in will dance exotically/beg/shave an eyebrow/kill a man for good olives loves them. There were pretty damn good, just not enough. And tiny. I felt gyped. I must make my own recipe again soon (and share with ya'll cause my olives rawk) to satiate myself.We both ordered the special, lamb shanks with spicy potatoes, green beans, and a spicy aioli sauce. Dear god. This was the best lamb I have ever had. Period. It was seared, juicy, tender, and crusted in these exotic, vagabond spices that just make your mouth pop! Sorry mom, Easter dinners never even came close to this. All I can say to all is call ahead and pray lamb is on the menu.We only spent maybe thirty minutes there, but we plan to go again, and as soon as possible. Aioli is a place of small plates so the price per person can really vary from a cheap meal to a vast banquet. Add in drinks for the average diner and this place is a pretty sweet deal.

TIPS

Instead of keeping your old punch bowl stored up in the attic or in the basement reinvent it as a salad bowl or for another serving piece at your next party!

When baking use Bakers Secret; a spray that is a mixture of flour and butter. (courtesy of Carol Lee Coss)

The best pizza in the country is in Connecticut.

Use Pam spray in your measuring cups or on measuring spoons.

Fashion

The Unlikely Inspiration Behind Hip-T
By Christine Meeks & Kelly Deserpa“Mom – don’t wear those jeans to school today – the last time we saw your butt crack”. From the voice of babes, and personal humiliation, we identified a problem and set out to solve it in

the as simple a way as possible. Thinking back, daily activities such as sitting at a restaurant or bending to tie a shoe were met with constant rear end exposure of one type or another. To make matters worse, we were tired of dealing with bulky hot, layers of t-shirts in hopes of camouflaging what might make an appearance with the next bend and snap! Let’s not forget, layering in itself is a great look. So, whether it was butt crack hanging out of the trunk, or using a sweatshirt as an additional “cover-up” accessory around the waist, something had to be done short of walking away from the investment we had made in the denim department.
The best products are the simple ones which make our lives easier and more comfortable. With that in mind, we took an old white t-shirt and cut the bottom half off. Slipped it on around the scene of the crime and layered with another t-shirt. After a good deep bend and squat in front of the mirror – no butt crack, thong exposure and no t-shirt tangle. We knew we had the next Big Idea! The first hip-T was born with a little passion a few dollars and a dream. Check us out at www.myhip-T.com!

As I mentioned I am preparing a notebook filled with notes and brochures and catalogs from our meetings. I will bring it to each meeting so that you can use it to see what you missed or to track down something we mentioned that you may have forgotten. Until I learn of an easier way to organize all of our information for easier access I guess the notebook will have to serve us.
